Spirit of the Town
Every step now was the effort of pushing the invisible barrier. Before him was sorrow for all of this life. He felt as if he was barely moving. Even the promise of going out of the town to the freedom of the hills was encased in dread now. He could not escape the understanding that as surely as the land and air and water determined the life he lived, the spirit of town humans determined it even more so. This covered him as completely as the water had when he leaped into a pond as a pup. The town spirit was why they were put out of their territory. He walked with the understanding that there was no escaping this spirit that drove town humans.
